Types of Student Visas for Germany

Before submitting any application, it is important to clarify which visa type is right for you? Have a look at the types of visas for students

Documents Required

The following is a current list of documents required for a Germany Student Visa as of 2025:

  • A valid Passport issued in last 10 years with 2 blank pages
  • Successfully completed Visa Application Form (filled in and signed)
  • Letter of Admission from a recognized German University.
  •  Academic transcripts (10th, 12th, and Bachelors if applicable)
  •  Score of Language Qualification Test (IELTS/TOEFL or German accredited certificates);
  • Proof of Financial Abilities (Blocked Account details.)
  • Health Insurance (For use in Germany);
  • Motivation Letter.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • APS Certificate: Required effective 2023;
  •  Visa Fee Payment Receipt.
  •  Two biometric passport sized photos (complying with Schengen Specifications).

Financial Proof: Blocked Account

From January 2025, you needed to have at least EUR 11,208 per year in a blocked account (EUR 934) for the time of your stay in Germany.

What changed in 2025?

  • You need a blocked account before the submission of your visa application.
  • The amount went from EUR 11,208 to EUR 11,904.
  • Only the approved providers (Fintiba, Expatrio, Studely, Coracle, and ICICI Bank) will be accepted.

When to Apply?

You should apply for your Germany Student Visa at least 3 months prior to your expected travel date. Most universities in Germany begin their academic year in April (Summer intake), or October (Winter intake).

Apply early to avoid delays. In peak season, just booking a visa appointment can take 4-6 weeks.
